Chapter 11 - how does nervous system respond to stimulation and produce movement: 11. 1: hierarchy of movement control. Movement involves making goals and moving to act on those goals, and correcting movements that lead us away from these goals. Major components of motor system are cerebrum (forebrain), brainstem, spinal cord. Brain / spinal cord = direct movements. Neuroprosthetic devices can replace movement production function provided by brainstem and spinal cord and restore forebrain control. When you want to pick up a cup, you inspect it to find out what part you want to grasp. Visual cortex sends info through cortical somatosensory regions to motor regions to plan and initiate movement. Brain sends instructions to spinal cord that controls muscles. When you are holding the cup, the sensory receptors in your fingers send signals to spinal cord to somatosensory cortex to motor cortex to show act is complete.
