Sexism: negative attitudes, prejudice, or discrimination directed toward someone on the basis of their gender: sexism = prejudice against women. Even when equally matched on their math ability, when women are made aware of the stereotype about women performing poorly in math, the women participants performed significantly worse. Gender stereotypes are learned and they automatically influence our perceptions and judgments, often without our conscious awareness of such bias. Learn that women are not aggressive, not independent, tend to be more emotional, more easily persuaded, dislike math & science, and tend to be passive; polite, gentle, nurturing, compassionate, neat, indecisive, concerned with their appearance, and quiet. Learn that men tend to be viewed as aggressive, independent, and non-emotional, decisive, confident, rough, blunt, sloppy, and loud. Cross-cultural consensus in content of gender stereotypes in 30 nations: men tend to be viewed as stronger, more assertive, dominant, active, and aggressive, women viewed as primarily concerned with fostering relationships with others, nurturing, and deference.
