Document Summary
Interpretation: east asian art looks diff from western art bc people from these cultures are literally seeing the world differently, differences in basic cognitive and perceptual processes b/w these two cultures. Focus on objects and their attributes: set of fixed abstract rules used to predict and explain behaviour of these objects. Emphasizes knowledge gained through experience rather than application of fixed abstract rules. Differences between westerners and east asians also present b/w greeks and chinese 2500 yrs ago. Origins: some suggest that holistic thinking is quite widespread through world, analytic thinking is relatively unusual thinking style, largely restricted to ppl who have had much contact w/ western society or education systems, ex. Arabs showed at least as much evidence of holistic thinking as chinese did: ex. Russians/turkish farmers & fishermen more holistic than americans: within cultures parallel differences, working class americans and russians more holistic than middle-class. Asked ppl to make decision about dog, carrot and rabbit.
