PSYC31H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Multiple Sclerosis, Prefrontal Cortex, Inferior Parietal Lobule
Document Summary
Speed of processing and short-term capacity constitutes the basic dimensions of attention. January 21st 2016: two dimensions can be examined separately: Digit span: digit span tests in the wechsler batteries (the intelligence and memory scales) are the format in most common use for measuring span of immediate verbal recall, digits forward: Subject is asked to repeat each sequence exactly as it is given. Examiner reads the numbers at a rate of 1 digit/sec. When a sequence is repeated correctly, the examiner reads the next longer number sequence, continuing until the subject fails a pair of sequences or repeats the highest (8-9 digits depending on test) sequence correctly. Failure on a sequence due to distraction, poor cooperation, inattentiveness, etc. Patient recalls more digits reversed than forward. Recall of 7 digits demonstrates performance well within normal limits. Span of 5 is marginal to normal limits. Age tends to affect forward span only minimally beyond ages 65 or 70.
