Document Summary

Debates about the meaning of tests for the placement and classification of individuals. Test scores may suggest to some that people are not created with the same basic abilities. Some ethnic groups obtain lower average scores on some psychological tests. African americans tend to score lower than white americans. Dispute is not over whether these differences exist but over why they do. Some say differences result from environmental factors, some say differences are biological. An increasing number of people no longer report their race when asked. Difficult to determine why the performance gap is not narrowing. It is not clear why so many students failed to report their racial identity. Steele believes that african american students perform more poorly on tests when they reveal their race. Reporting multiple identity can be a source of tension or anxiety. Increase in non-reporting ethnicity results from a poorly designed online questionnaire.
