Document Summary

Psychedelic drugs: drugs that induce a reality-altering experience consisting of hallucinations, sensory distortions, or delusions: psychedelic drugs are classified into three general categories: Hallucinogens: large class of psychedelic drugs that produce hallucinations as their main pharmacological effects: lysergic acid diethylamide (lsd): most representative hallucinogen, psilocybin: from psilocybe mushrooms, mescaline: found in peyote cacti, dimethyltryptamine. Lsd ingestion and effects: lsd and most other hallucinogens are typically orally administered, drops of lsd are often placed onto small squares of blotter paper or stamps, via oral administration, lsd reaches peak absorption after 60 minutes. Lsd and the 5-ht system: chemical structure of lsd resembles serotonins chemical structure, allowing lsd to act on serotonin receptors. Modest changes in heart rate, slight dizziness, and mild nausea: pronounced subjective experiences: Perception of images or sounds that are not real: pseudo-hallucinations are common. Altered perception of things that are real: trip: overall hallucinogenic experience. Good trip: desirable pseudohallucinations; enhanced perception or insightfulness.
