PSYC62H3 Chapter 5: chapter 5-5
Document Summary
Chapter 5- synaptic transmission, drugs and chemical neuroanatomy. 5ht(serotonin) is included in monoamines due to being similar to mono-amines. Neuro active ligands tend to act on memory, learning, motivation whereas some might affect these more than others. All monoamines are non-acids and share one amine group (nh2) Serotonin is widely distributed in the brain and has widespread effects in behavior. Imporant influence on aggression, impulsivity, mood, emotion, anxiety, learning, motivation and is strongly present in psychopathologies. Varying serotonin receptors (almost dozen) very specialized and complex receptors. Catecholamines are closely related in terms of precursors. Dopamine plays a role in motivating behavior, imbalances in dopamine related to depression, schizophrenia, addiction and parkinson"s. Five subtypes of receptors: d1 and d5 are excitatory, and d2, d3,d4 are inhibitory. Norepiniepherine or noradrenaline: amount is quite low in brain. Central control of arousal, regulation of central stress response, stress, anxiety and learning. Receptors include sub receptors of alpha and beta.
