PSYC62H3 Chapter 9: GHB, Inhalants & Anesthetics
Document Summary
Substance that serves both as a drug and a nts that produces cns depressant effects. Gbl ghb; gbl can be found in many household products; stain and paint removers. Uses: ghb as anesthetic, ghb is naturally snethsized as well in cns, ghb: adverse effects: intoxication, deep unconsciousness, ban over the counter sale. Doses of ghb exhibit changes in dopamine levels. Ghb elicits unique sleeping pattern, characterized by growth-hormone release during first 2 hours of sleep and longer periods of deep sleep. May benefit narcolepsy; day time sleepiness, fragmented and non-restorative sleep: disruption to nighttime sleep = deficiency in growth hormone. Improving night time sleeping = reduced episodes of sleep during day. Behavioral and subjective effects: stronger doses: confusion and induce drowsiness, memory loss after drug use (vs. during) Impairments in balance: happiness, euphoria, increased sexuality, optimism. Overdose & risk for addiction: cardiovascular effects; polydrug use (ie. alcohol, acute withdrawal period follows episode of ghb, exhaustion, memory loss, confusion, clumsiness.
