Chapter 15: Antipsychotic Drugs
Schizophrenia
• Severe, lifelong mental illness
• Distured thikig, aoral ehaiour, iailit to uderstad hat’s real, ad
impaired processing of emotions
• Symptoms are either (+) or (-)
o Refer to presence or reduction in abnormal behaviours, respectively
o Positive symptoms→ hallucinations, delusions, and thoughts of persecution
o Negative symptoms → reduced emotional responsiveness, social withdrawal,
reduced movement, and lack of motivation
• Symptoms must be disruptive for a period of at least 6 months
• 5 types of schizophrenia:
o Paranoid tpe → proiet positie sptos
o Catatonic tpe → predoiatl egatie sptos, iludig ioilit
o Disorganized tpe → disorgaized ehaiours ad silly/immature emotional
expression
o Undifferentiated tpe → Does’t appropriatel fit these other ategories
o Residual tpe → patiets ho o ehiit less proiet sptos of
schizophrenia
• Treatment-resistant schizophrenia
o Exhibit no or minimal improvements after two trials with with either typical or
atypical antipsychotic drug
• Fuctioal outcoes→ iludes patiet’s ilusio ito a community, behaving
normally in social situations, and successfully employing psychosocial skills
o In schizophrenia includes employability, ability to conduct daily living activities,
and ability to form friendships
• Sensory-gating deficit
o Diminished capacity to filter out unimportant stimuli in their environment
o May lead to misperceptions of their environment (possibly facilitating delusional
behaviour)
• Cognitive dysmetria: abnormalities in processing, coordinating, and responding to info
• First diagosis for shizophreia foud i oe’s late tees or earl 20s
• Relatively prominent among psychiatric disorders
o Prevalence equal among males and females but males develop earlier
• Has genetic basis
o Risk factor increases if family member has it

• Prodromal phase of schizophrenia
o Schizophrenia-like symptoms that occur less frequently and with less severity
than symptoms found in schizophrenia
