PSYC62H3 Chapter 12: Chapter 12
Document Summary
Psychedelic (mind expanding) drugs induce a reality-altering experience consisting of hallucinations, sensory distortions, or delusions. Three broad categories: hallucinogens, mixed stimulant psychedelics, and dissociative anesthetics. Hallucinogens represent a large class of psychedelic drugs that produce hallucinations as their main pharmacological effects. The most representative drug of this class is lysergic acid diethylamide (lsd), which goes by a variety of streets names such as acid, window pane, and blotter, among other street names. Drug enforcement administration (dea) not only classified lsd as a schedule i substance but also classified its precursor, lysergic acid, as a schedule i controlled substance. A newer class of hallucinogens is called nbome drugs referred as (cid:862)(cid:374)-(cid:271)o(cid:373)(cid:271)s. (cid:863: they produce pharmacological actions and effects similar to other hallucinogens. Women make up approximately 37 percent of those ever trying a hallucinogenic substance, again by their broad definition. Approximately 25 million u. s. residents have specifically used lsd in their lifetimes. We also find hallucinogen use prevalent on college campuses.
