William james published the principles of psychology in 1890 and it has continued to influence psychological thought ever since its first publication. James was rated the most eminent american psychologist in 1903 and was second, after wundt, on the all-time list. William james was born in new york to a wealthy family with liberal, democratic values and intense & wide-ranging interests. His brother henry james became a well-known and influential novelist. From early childhood, the family visited europe, and james received a very through education. As a young man, he felt depressed and aimless. In 1861 james began studying at harvard, first in chemistry and finally in medicine and he taught physiology at harvard in 1872. His varied background and his attempt to relate class material to life situations were appealing to students. William james began writing the principles of psychology in 1878, it took him 12 years to finish it.
