Document Summary

Reinforcement: process in which a behaviour is strengthened by the immediate consequence that reliably follows its occurrence. Defining reinforcement: the occurrence of a particular behaviour, is followed by an immediate consequence, that results in the strengthening of the behaviour (the person is more likely to engage in the behaviour again in the future) Operant behaviour: a behaviour that is strengthened through the process of reinforcement. Reinforce: the consequence that strengthens an operant behaviour. Positive reinforcement: the occurrence of a behaviour, is followed by the addition of a stimulus (reinforce) or an increase in the intensity of a stimulus, which results in the strengthening of a behaviour. Negative reinforcement: the occurrence of a behaviour, is followed by the removal of a stimulus (an aversive stimulus) or a decrease in the intensity of a stimulus, which results in the strengthening of a behaviour.
