Document Summary

Theory: statement of analytical tool that tries to explain how certain facts or variables are related in order to predict future events. Sociologists use these to direct researcher and inspire discussion/debate about how the world works. Humans lived like animals but had curiosity to learn about their social and physical environment, motivated by self-interest and power. In the book leviathan (monster or ruler), he argued humans were rational and wanted to give up some autonomy to an authority for a collective benefit. Government kept peace and allowed people to fulfill personal interests under law: the leviathan was a collective will so people were allowed to revolt against it, he basically thought humans were the building blocks of society. John locke: he believed that god was responsible for emergence of society and government, god gave people certain rights such as right to self-preservation and private property.
