Document Summary

As canada"s proportion of elderly persons grows, we need to appreciate that a new kind of older adult is emerging. One who is healthier, better educated, and more financially secure than ever before. Importance of elderly in society will continue to grow. According to statistics canada, the proportion of seniors who are visible minorities and of indigenous descent will also continue to rise. Most canadian seniors today are happy and healthy. What is troubling, however, is the downward trend of satisfaction levels across all ages between 2003 and 2011. There was a statistically significant decline in the life satisfaction of those 65 and over. These declines might be due to concerns over the 2008 financial crisis and the potential to negatively impact retirement savings. Some researchers suggest that with the increasing proportion of the population 65 and over, life satisfaction levels for seniors may represent an emerging public policy issue.
