People are responsible for creating the social world around them and that society could be changed through conscious reflection. Natural state: hobbe"s conception of the human condition before the emergence of formal social structures. People in their natural state were like animals > motivated by self-interest and pursuit of power. Natural state > everyone would be in competition and living in fear. However people are rational beings and would be willing to compromise freedom to an authority (democracy, monarchy etc) role of government > preserve the individual"s ability to achieve self-interests while protecting ev- eryone from others" natural, self-serving inclinations. Government should be overthrown if it fails to fulfil its obligations. Argued that god was responsible for the emergence of society and government. People are born tabula rasa (blank slate)
