Document Summary
Helped found the communist party of italy. Accepted marx"s analysis of the struggle between the ruling class and the subordinate working class. However, marx believed that they dominated through strong arm state (police and mil- itary) whereas gramsci believed that they it was ideological control and manipulation. Believed that there are two different forms of political control: domination and hege- mony. Domination: the direct physical and violent coercion exerted by the police and the military to maintain social boundaries and enforce social rules. Hegemony: domination through ideological control and consent. Ideological control: society"s dominant ideas reflect the interests of the ruling class and help to ask social inequalities. Gramsci separated the superstructure into the state (coercive institutions like po- lice, military, government and systems of law) and civil society (schools, media, reli- gion, trade unions, and cultural associations) Focused on the role society plays in establishing hegemony.
