CHAPTER 1: THINKING SOCIOLOGICALLY ABOUT THE SCHOOLED
SOCIETY
Introduction: What is a schooled society?
SCHOOLED SOCIETY: formal education moved to centre stage of social life
over the past century
-Canada relies on the education system to rationalize and justify the social order
-Demand for formal education partly stems from its rising power to shape lives
-Schooling has become the major route for social mobility
SOCIAL MOBILITY: the ability of individuals to move up (or down) in a
society conceived as a finely gradated hierarchy
-Minorities encouraged to use schooling as a lever of upward mobility and social
justice
-School aka great equalizer provide opportunities to the disadvantaged
-Education shapes the organization of society (e.g. nation building and
citizenship, classifies and regulates who works where, creating specialized roles,
big organizations - job training and certificate programs)
-Many social problems are seen to have educational solutions
Thinking sociologically about Schooling
The Art of Applying Science to Study Society
-Social science differs from natural science by recognizing the fundamental fact of
human agency: the unique ability to make meaning, to choose, and to
behave intentionally
-Any science of schooling must therefore incorporate the creative agency of
humans
-Social behaviour is often regular, stable, and predictable
-Human Agency ensures that peoples behaviour is not entirely determined but it
does not create behaviour that is entirely random either

-social forces have probabilistic, not deterministic, effects on people
-Even though biological instincts may play a role in our recurring social practices,
social arrangements are social constructions
-Wants are shaped by social structures, traditions, religion, etc.
-Complex social behaviour aka emergent phenomena: products of the interplay
b/w individual psychologies and larger social forces
-Recurring theme in sociological theory: to comprehend how individual/micro-
level actions are continually transformed into larger-scale/macro level social
structures
-Macro forces channel individual actions, motives, and meanings
-Social forces create regularity in complex human behaviour that is roughly
analogous to the force of instincts on other animals and to physical laws that
propel the motion of quarks
-The concept of social structure is used to understand this recurring regularity
ostructure: solidity or permanence, social: interaction and meaning
oHighlights social construction as open to change and also has solidity and
impact
-This social structure is generated by human conduct, not natural forces
-Social structures are flexible but enduring ensembles of interconnected rules
and resources
e.g. The social structure of schools/schooling - Fundamental roles of students and
teachers both shaped by rules. The curriculum organizes what is taught and is
authorized by government (more rules) is designed by subject experts/learning
specialists (more resources). Differing student/teacher cultures the social rules that
guide the action and the interaction of both students and teachers. The layout of the
buildings and the content of the curriculum, both tangible parts of social structure
also shape how students and teachers interact and how learning is accomplished. All
of this and much more comprises the social structure of schooling
-Human agency is channelled by the power of macro level sources to create
complex social structures
