Document Summary

Genetic variation necessary for organism to survive in changing environments. Lab notes chapter 4 measuring genetic variation. Need something for natural selection to select. Gene flow: exchange of alleles between engihbour populations. Geography plays important role in process: fewer barriers, and closer distance btwn two populations = more gene flow, more gene flow = more homogeneous populations, some isolation between populations reduces amount of gene flow. Can use molecular gentic techniques to sequence dna. Can use data to estimate amount of genetic variation. Small amount of tissue is homogenized (ground up to release enzymes from cells) Or small amount of blood drawn from some individuals. Electrical current applied across gel for 20 to 30 minutes. Drop of each sample placed in straight row near edge of rectangular sheet of cellulose acetate gel. Electrodes attached to filter paper wicks soaked in buffer solution at end of each gel.
