Document Summary

Chemical equilibrium: state reached when concentrations of reactants and products remain constant over time. Equilibrium mixture: a mixture of reactants and products in the equilibrium state. Irreversible reactions: proceed nearly to completion, equilibrium mixture contains almost all products and almost no reactants, reverse reaction too slow to be detected. Rate forward reaction and reverse reactions given by following rate laws: rate forward = kf[a] rate reverse = kr[b] Rate of forward reaction decreases as concentration of reactant decreases, while rate of reverse reaction increases as concentration of product increases. Decreasing rate of forward and increasing rate of reverse become equal, no further changes in concentrations, products and reactants disappear as fast as they are formed. Chemical equilibrium is dynamic state, forward and reverse reactions continue at equal rates, no net conversion of reactants to products. Substances expression may be gases or molecules and ions in solution, not pure solids/liquids. Equilibrium constant for reaction at particular temperature always has same value.
