CHAPTER 7: POSEIDON, SEA DEITIES, GROUP DIVINITIES, AND
MONSTERS
Poseidon:
- god of the sea; but not the only god in the water
PELEUS AND THETIS
- Thetis was destined to bear a son mightier than his father (why Zeus didn’t
mate with her. Typical)
- She married a human, Peleus.
- Thetis had the ability to change shape (bird, trees, tigers) and bore
Achilles and later left Peleus
ACIS, GALATEA, AND THE CYCLOPS POLYPHEMUS
- Galatea, a Nereid (nymph), was loved by the Cyclops Polyphemus, a son
of Poseidon.
- She didn’t like his attention and instead went after this handsome fellow so
Polyphemus tried to make himself more man for her. Also continued to
give her many gifts.
POSEIDON AND AMPHITRITE
- third Nereid, Amphitrite is the wife of Poseidon. (tho. A reluctant one like
her sister) Though Poseidon was able to win her.
oSimilar in the roles of Zeus and Hera. Poseidon has a weakness for
women and his wife is very angry and vengeful
oGot a son named Triton, a merman. Can change shape at will.
- Poseidon cheated with Tyro, often discussing himself as the Thessalian
river Enipeus to meet with her. They bore twins, Neleus and Pelias,
legendary figures.
Proteus
- sea divinity, older gen. of gods
- often named attendant of Poseidon or his son. (he merges identities
sometimes with Nereus, Proteus and Triton)
- Old man of the sea who can foretell the future like Nereus.
- Can also change shape.
APPEARANCE AND CHARACTER OF POSEIDON
- very similar in appearance to Zeus. Got the beard. More severe and
rough. Carries trident.
- Also called ‘earthshaker’ since he’s the god of earthquakes.
- Creates horses and bulls. Often transforms into them.
