In private sector workers have right to go on strike, but employers have right to "lock out" these workers/refuse them access to their jobs. If employee meets with criteria of work yet employer still wishes to terminate the employment contract, the employee must be give a reasonable period of time in which to find new employment, known as reasonable notice. If reasonable notice not give, employee is entitled to be paid the amount they would have earned during the period: minimum notice period is established under employment standards law. Increased restrictions on public sector workers and their unions and increased willingness to order striking employees back to work. The facilitative role: states can shape beliefs and values adhere to by parties; and provide support services which assist parties, ex. Federal govt implementing programs to promote more harmonious labour- management relationships-- should be used as complements to meaningful rights and protections rather than as substitutes to them.
