HIS231H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Social Bandit, Autonomous Communities Of Spain, Balkanization
Document Summary
Balkanization of the caribbean in the 18th century as the dutch, french, and english replaced spain. Focus switched from peru to new spain (mexico) due to precious-metal exports. Sailings b/w spain and the colonies became less frequent. Rival colonies became more established (disrupted trade, promoted illegal activities, etc. Before the 1713 peace of utrecht, there were two types of society existing in colonies: The organized and formal colony: people who accepted the rules of the colony, even if under duress. ie. struggling settlers, prospering planters, officials, merchants, suffering slaves, free persons of colour. People who operated outside the conventional confines of the colony (transfrontier people). ie. maroons and buccaneers. Petit marronage: temporary desertion of individual slaves (a few hours up to a few months). Grand marronage: organized attempt to establish autonomous communities that were independent of the colony. Marronage depended on good leadership (leaders were usually determined by military and political ability).
