Psy100 readings chapter 1. 1) the science of psychology. Psychology: the scientific study of behaviour, thought, and experience, and how they can be affected by physical, mental, social, and environmental factors. In all situations, we make inferences about others based on different cues they provide. Cyber emotional intelligence examines the assumptions people make based on online personalities. The field of psychology is viewed through the lens of pop psychology (tv shoes, self- help books in the bookstores, etc. ) Psychology is better to be considered a collection of disciplines with two unifying qualities: psychology involves the study of behaviour (perceptions, thoughts, and emotions, psychologists use the scientific method. Theory => hypothesis (a testable prediction about processes that can be observed and measured) => test hypothesis. Theories are used to generate hypotheses: theories are not the same thing as opinions or beliefs, theories are not equally credible, what makes a good quality theory is not the amount of support behind it.
