Document Summary
Elaboration likelihood model: when audiences are motivated to pay attention to message & have opportunity for careful processing, they"ll be persuaded by facts of the argument. When motivation and opportunity are missing, they"ll be persuaded by other factors. Central route to persuasion: when people pay close attention to content of message, evaluate evidence, & examine logic of argument. Peripheral route to persuasion: persuasion depends on other factors not directly related to message itself, like attractiveness of person delivering info. Using central route effectively: make it personal. Construal level theory: describes how info affects us differently depending on our psychological distance from the info. Only argue for own perspective vs giving two-sided appeal that acknowledges different perspectives. Attitude inoculation: strategy for strengthening attitudes and making them more resistant to change by exposing people to weak counter-argument and refuting that argument. Processing fluency: ease with which info is processed.
