Document Summary
Stress: psychological and physiological reaction that occurs when perceived demands exceed existing resources to meet those demands. Events (stressors) and experiences in response to events (stress reaction) Death of spouse is #1 cause of stress. Fight-or-flight response: set of physiological changes that occur in response to psychological or physical threats. General adaptation syndrome (gas): theory of stress responses involving stages of alarm, resistance, and exhaustion. Stressful event causes an alarm reaction which consists of threat recognition and physiological responses. Second is resistance which is characterized by one using their physical & mental resources to respond to stressor. Final stage is exhaustion which occurs when experience depletes physical resources and physiological stress response declines. Bodily responses are result of activity in autonomic pathway. In response to stress, hypothalamus stimulates sympathetic system: causes inner adrenal glands (adrenal medulla) to release epinephrine & norepinephrine, chemicals trigger bodily fight-or-flight changes.
