Problem-focused coping: coping strategies that elucidate the clearest way to proceed- often used to deal with daily stressors. Emotion-focused coping: coping strategies that elucidate emotional feelings, and is usually used to cope with meaningful, unexplainable things- death, illness, trauma, etc. Positive psychology: studies human strengths and potential. Focusing on positive emotions- very powerful tool for coping: negative mood- narrows attention focus to small portion of environment, positive mood- broadened attention & increase creativity. Optimism: tendency to have favourable, constructive view of situations, and expect positive outcomes. Pessimist: tendency to have negative perception of life and expect negative outcomes. Optimism- correlated with better health than pessimism. The nun study: in trying to control lifestyles" effects on longetivy- studied nuns who were optimistic/pessimistic: strong correlation b/w positive emotion during young adulthood (20"s) & longevity. Neuroticism: negative affectivity: responds to problems with anxiety, hostility, anger, guilt, or nervousness, often leads to negative health.
