Document Summary
9. 3 biological, environmental, and behavioural influences on intelligence. Higher than normal ratio of glial cells to neurons in left parietal lobe & parts of temporal lobe. High density of neurons in right frontal lobe. Parietal lobe- 15% larger than average & contains an extra fold. Frontal lobes- extra convolutions increase surface area & neural connectivity. Determine the extent to which intelligence is related to our genes. As genetic relatedness increases, the similarity in iq scores also increase. Heritability estimate: how much the difference between people can be accounted for by differences in their genes: the heritability estimate depends on the sample being studied. Iq scores depend on other factors (education, growth of the brain, adequate nutrition, etc. ) The rich have resources- in many of the external areas they maximize the benefits, thus the difference is most likely accountable by the biology. The more uniform the sample being studied, the higher the heritability estimate, and vice versa.
