Research design: set of methods that allow hypothesis to get tested. Variable: property of something that can take on diff. values. Operational definitions: details that define variables for purposes of specific study. Answers question of what a phenomenon is - describes its characteristics. To answer questions, researchers gather the following designs : case studies: in-depth report about the details of a specific case. Scientists will describe an individual"s history & behaviour in a lot of detail. Reserved for individuals w/ uncommon characteristic or have lived through unusual experience: naturalistic observation: unobtrusively observe & record behaviour as it occurs in subject"s natural environment. Researchers pay attention to specific details and operational definitions: surveys and questionnaires: researchers use self-reporting, responses are provided directly by people being studied. To figure out if survey is valid, for clinical questionnaires they can compare results to a participant"s clinical diagnosis. For questionnaires examining something else, they perform large amt of pretesting to calculate norms in data.
