Document Summary
Sound waves are transformed into neural signals. Two most important characteristics: frequency and amplitude. Pitch the perceptual experience of sound wave frequencies: ex. Amplitude determine loudness high = loud measured in decibels (d) Pinna outer region helps channel sound waves allows you to determine the source or location of a sound. Auditory canal extends from pinna to eardrum. Ossicles three tiny moveable bones; malleus (hammer), incus (anvil), and stapes (stirrup) they are attached to the ear drum and inner ear. Sound localization the process of identifying where sound comes from. Two ways to localize sound: slight time difference between the ears, difference in the intensity which sound is heard from both ears sound shadow. Primary auditory cortex major perceptual centre of the brain involved in perceiving what we hear. Secondary auditory cortex help interpret complex sounds. Right brain better detecting smaller change than left.
