10. 2 infancy and childhood: cognitive and emotional development. Jean piaget (1896-1980) o(cid:271)ser(cid:448)i(cid:374)g a(cid:374)d testi(cid:374)g his (cid:272)hildre(cid:374)"s a(cid:271)ilities fro(cid:373) i(cid:374)fa(cid:374)(cid:272)(cid:455) onwards: laid groundwork for the modern science of cognitive development: the study of changes in memory, thought, and reasoning process that occur throughout the lifespan. Knowledge accumulates and is modified by 2 process: assimilation: a conservative process, whereby people fit new information into the belief systems they already posses, accommodation: a creative process whereby people modify their belief structures based on experiences. There are 4 distinct cognitive development stages from birth to early adolescence: sensorimotor (0-2), preoperational (2-7), concreate operational (7-11), formal operational (11-adulthood) The sensorimotor stage: living in the material world. Even when they are infants they have a sense of quantity. By 2-2 years old, scale errors decline, around 3, they begin to understand that a scale model of a room can symbolize an actual room.
