Module 10. 2: infancy and childhood: cognitive and emotional development. Memory and language skills are slower to develop in infants who regularly watch tv. Physical, cognitive, and social transitions are influenced by individual genetic and sociocultural factors. Cognitive development: study of changes in memory, thought, and reasoning processes that occur throughout the lifespan. Knowledge accumulates and is modifies by assimilation and accommodation. Assimilation: conservative process, whereby people fit new information into belief systems they already possess. Accommodation: creative process whereby people modify their belief structures based on experience. Cognitive development through 4 stages: sensorimotor. Birth to 2 years, infants" thinking about and exploration of the world are based on immediate sensory and motor experiences. Immersion in present moment, no object permanence (1st milestone) Object permanence: ability to understand that objects exist even when they cannot be directly perceived: preoperational. Language development, using symbols, pretend play, mastering the concept of conservation.
