Psychology: scienti c study of both behavior and mind. Initial thoughts related to psychology was done in philosophy of the mind. Aristotle: de anima: considers topics such as the nature of thought, sensation, and imagination , tabula rasa (blank slate): describing the mind as a blank slate of which experience to write upon. Ali ibn al-abbas al-mujasi: persian physician, wrote the complete act of medicine. 1st to work and describe neuroanatomy of the brain and discuss a variety of mental illnesses and their treatments. Empiricism: view that knowledge arises directly from observations and experiences. Psychologists use behavior to make inferences about what is happening in the mind. Dualism: idea that mind and body are separate entities. Rene descartes: believed the mind could exert its in uences over the body through the pineal gland, concept of re ex: the body acting without the mind.
