Psychological disorders: medical model, it is useful to think of abnormal behaviour as a disease. Distinguishing one illness from another: etiology. Apparent causation and developmental history of an illness: prognosis. Forecast about the probable course of an illness: criteria of abnormal behaviour, deviance. People are often said to have a disorder if their behaviour deviates from what the society considers normal or acceptable. Cultures determine as to what is acceptable : ex. cross sex dressing acceptable for women but deviant for men, maladaptive behaviour. People are judged to have psychological disorder because their every day adaptive behaviour is impaired. Key criteria in diagnosis of drug disorders: use of cocaine impairing one"s social and occupational functions, personal distress. Diagnosis of psychological disorder is based on an individual"s report of great personal distress. People trouble by depression or anxiety disorders: stereotypes of psychological disorders, psychological disorders are incurable.
