scientific method = systematic: proceeds orderly steps that are carefully planned, observing and measuring phenomena to answer questions about what happens, when it happens, what causes it and why. replication: repeating a study and getting the same or similar results (to confirm findings) jean piaget: birth to adolescent stages of development. different types of design: descriptive, correlational, experimental. variable: anything that can be measured and that can vary. operational definitions: identify and quantify variables so they can be measured. descriptive studies: observational studies, how data is collected, observing and noting behaviour for objective analysis, especially valuable in the early stages of research to see if the phenomenon even exists. naturalistic observation: observer remains separated from and makes no attempt to change the situation. participant observation: researcher is involved in the situation. longitudinal studies: changes that occur to the same people over a long time.
