Document Summary

Psychology is a vast discipline - two unifying qualities (1. study of behavior 2. Scientific method) needed to group these disciplines into psychological science. Psychology - the scientific study of behavior, thought and emotion, and experience, and how they can be affected by physical, mental, social and environmental factors. A field of study is based on the use of the scientific method. Learning about the world through observations, developments of theories, and test and predicts the theories. Involves the interaction b/t hypothesis testing and the constructions of theories. A testable prediction about processes that can be observed and measured. Do not prove but must be testable. Pseudoscience - an idea that is presented as science but does not actually utilize basic principles of scientific thinking or procedure. Specific predictions that can test the theory. An explanation for a broad range of observations. Built from hypotheses that are repeatedly tested and confirmed. Not the same thing as opinions or beliefs.
