Personality: a characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling, and behaving that is unique to each individual, and remains relatively consistent over time and situations. Idiographic approach: creating detailed descriptions of a specific person"s unique personality characteristics. Nomothetic approach: examine personality in large groups of people, with the aim of making generalizations about personality structure. E. g. personality factors that predict courage and heroism. Personality trait: a person"s habitual patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving. Short-cuts to understanding people + help to predict how that person will behave across a range of different situations. Allport: developed a theory of personality structure by organizing these words into traits, launching a strong trend in personality psychology that continues to this day- attempting to identify and measure the key personality traits. 1st systematic attempt to id all possible traits. The barnum effect: why personality tests of questionable validity are so widely believed, as well as horoscopes, astrologers, psychics, and the like.
