Document Summary
Module 16. 3 - biomedical therapies psychopharmacotherapy: the use of drugs to attempt to manage or reduce client"s symptoms. Psychotic drugs: medications designed to alter psychological functioning. Designed to cross the blood-brain barrier: a network of tightly packed cells that only allow specific types of substances to move from the bloodstream to the brain in order to protect delicate brain cells against harmful infections. Antidepressant: medication designed to elevate mood and reduce other symptoms of depression. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors: (maois) deactivating monoamine oxidase (mao), an enzyme that breaks down serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine at the synaptic cleft of nerve cells. Fewer nt are used, so they are in the synapse. Tricyclic antidepressant: block the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (ssris): class of antidepressant drugs that block the reuptake of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Enhancing mood through serotonin is just a hypothesis! Decrease the extent to which parts of the amygdala are activated.
