Document Summary

7. 1 - memory systems: memory is a collection of several systems that store information in different forms for differing amounts of time atkinson & shiffrin 1968. Stores retain information in memory without using it for any speci c purpose (similar to hard drives) The three stores are: sensory memory, short term memory (stm) Control processes shift information from one memory store to another. Attention decides which info will go to stm. Encoding info goes from stm > ltm. Retrieval info os brought back from ltm > stm: sensory memory. Sensory memory is a memory store that accurately holds perceptual information for a very brief amount of time. Iconic memory (visual) => one half to one second. Echoic memory (auditory) => only for about 5 seconds. Short term memory is a memory store with limited capacity and duration (less than a minute) Chunking organizing smaller units of information into larger, more meaningful units.
