Document Summary
Start thinking critically about some of the issues we are going to be talking about. All are names for the field of study that"s concerned with the nature and development of abnormal. Abnormal behaviour - patterns of emotion, thought and action deemed pathological for one or more of the following reasons: infrequent occurrence, violation of norms, personal distress, disability or dysfunction, and unexpectedness. Statistical infrequency - the behaviour is not common in the general population. [look at a normal curve - which is a distribution - many people will cluster around the average/norm, the further out you go, the fewer people would fit in the area. Normal distribution curve - but also those who are on the right side of the curve, the gifted, are they considered abnormal?] Against social norms - are their behaviours making us feel anxious, nervous, violated.
