Document Summary
Psy240 chapter 2: theories and treatment of abnormality. Theory: set of ideas that provides a framework for asking questions about a phenomenon and for gathering and interpreting information about that phenomenon. Therapy is a treatment, usually based on a theory or phenomenon, that addresses those factors the theory says causes the phenomenon. Biopsychosocial approach: recognizing that it is often a combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that results in the development of psychological symptoms. These factors are often referred to as risk factors, because they increase the risk of psychological problems. Psychological example: difficulty remaining calm in stressful situations. Sociocultural example: growing up with the stress of discrimination based on ethnicity or race. Factors that increase risk for multiple types of psychological problems are referred to as transdiagnostic risk factors. Diathesis-stress model: says that it takes both an existing diathesis to a disorder and a trigger, or stress, to create the disorder.
