Document Summary
Levels of analysis: a topic can be studied in several different ways, each contributing its own dimension to our understanding. Used golgi stain on newborn animals (whose brains- smaller) Neuron doctrine: individual cells transmit signals in the nervous system, cells are not continuous with other cells. Synapse: gap b/w 2 cells" dendrites & axon. Receptors: neurons that receive sensory information, whose dendrite is a receptor. Neurons are not connected indiscriminately to other neurons- they for specific pathways w/ specific neurons. Resting potential: (-70 mv: potential of axon at rest (no incoming/outgoing signals, inside neuron (more negative) outside neuron (more positive) There are no small" action potentials, or intense" ones. Ideal for sending signals over large distances- the signal will stay the same throughout the distance. Neurotransmitter: neurotransmitter goes from the presynaptic axon to postsynaptic dendrite: connects the 2 neurons. Relationship b/w nerve firing & sensory experience the stronger the sensation- the more rapid (increasing rate) action potentials occurred.
