Ideology: system of ideas & ideals, forms the basis of social, political or economic policy or protest. Politics: processes by which individuals and groups act to promote their interests. Power: capacity to compel people to act in certain ways through the political process. State: set of institutions with the authority to make the rules that govern a society; e. g. canada is a liberal democratic state. Social movements: organized group of people with an agenda or plan for social change, to be achieved through agitation & political pressure. Focuses attention on issues that need correcting, & then mobilizing people to put pressure on the powerful members of society in order to make these changes. Civil liberties: freedom that protects individuals against government, e. g. freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of movement & freedom of the press. Counter ideology: supports alternative social values & challenges the dominant ideology. Social movements spread the influence of their perspective on society through counter-ideology.
