Wheaton: the role of sociology in the study of mental health & vise versa. Looking at mental health(mh)/sociology from this dual role helps to find insights/developments. Two basic claims: social environment is a starting point/carrier for emotional inequality, variation in emotional functions has social consequences on institutions/society. Biology has been given more and more attention in terms of mh, and it is thought that the social environment produces the biological change that causes mental health. Based on 1) sociology operating at a basic level of science 2) sociologists have a range of methodological techniques to use: mainly uses experimental model but these approaches are beneficial because they can be applied to other disciplines. Argues there is some connection between the two: mh can be treated as a category if that category was produced from a continuum. Continuum is necessary because it allows the weighing of factors, it allows for factors to be deemed more/less important than others.
