Document Summary

Sociology test notes- chapter 11: ethnic and race relations. History of ethnicity and race: different places social relations in flux. Ethnicity and race are not constant or monolithic concepts but rather represent dynamic. Sociologists argue that the terms ethnicity and race have historically specific significations i. e. they mean different things to different people at different times in. Race refers to people"s assumed but socially significant physical or genetic characteristics. Ethnicity refers to social distinctions and relations among individuals and groups based on their cultural characteristics (language, religion, customs, history) Social group labelling creates hierarchal social dichotomies by the attribution of negative intellectual, moral, and behavioural characteristics to subordinate populations and the attribution of positive or jot-negative characteristics to the dominant group(s) (those who label or stereotype) Social positions of superiority and inferiority are thus created; a social order is built.
