Document Summary

Debt, discipline, & dispossession: race, class, & the global slump. In other words, social re- lations in a capitalist society must be constructed in a way where workers have no choice other than to be submissive and disciplined to those in authority or the capitalists. The author discusses the use of coercion to establish discipline, especially in communities of colour where militarized policing and constant supervision is rampant. We are reminded that capitalism"s disciplinary agenda comes with a hefty financial price as prisons and the police are no cheap institutions to run. These points made by the author makes one reflect on their own social conditioning and how easy it is to believe that questioning the status quo or rebelling against authoritative figures is the wrong thing to do. Statistics provided about the increased number of inmates over the last few years are shocking and indication of how corrupt the justice and criminal systems really are.
