Document Summary

Limb bones and girdles, anything encircling a body, are appended (attached) to axial skeleton. The upper limb is composed of three basic segments: the hand, forearm, and arm. The lower limb is also composed of three basic segments: the foot, leg, and thigh. Appendicular skeleton enables people to carry out a variety of movements, such as driving or writing with a pencil. Consists of a clavicle anteriorly and a scapula posteriorly. Anteriorly, the medial end of each clavicle joins to the sternum and the first rib, and the lateral ends of the clavicles join to the scapulae at the shoulder. Besides attaching the upper limb to the trunk, the pectoral girdle provides attachment for many muscles that move the limb. This arrangement is good for flexibility but not for stability: shoulder dislocations are common. The clavicles (aka little keys; aka collar bones) are s-shaped bones that extend horizontally across the superior thorax on the anterior surface.
