Biology 1001A Chapter Notes - Chapter 18: Allele Frequency, Qualitative Variation, Genotype Frequency
Document Summary
Microevolution change in the frequency of alleles or heritable phenotype variations in a population over time. Population all the individuals of a single species that live together in the same place and time. Phenotypic variation differences in appearance or function among individuals of a population. Quantitative variation individuals differ in small incremental ways. Example, it can range various shades between blue and white. Natural selection often changes the mean value of a character or its variability within a population. Qualitative variation exist in two or more discrete states and intermediate forms are often absent. The existence of discrete variants of a character is a polymorphism. We describe phenotypes of polymorphisms quantitatively, example, there are 123 blue and 344 white. Organisms with different genotypes can often display the same phenotypes. Also organisms with the same genotypes can have different phenotypes (due to things like environment factors). Only genetic based variation is subject to evolutionary change.
