Document Summary

Increasing atmospheric co2 by the urnign of fossil fuels. The organic compounds that are burned were formed in old forests through the process of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process by which light energy is used to convert carbon dioxide into organic molecules. The two stages of photosynthesis are the light reactions and the calvin cycle. Photosynthesis is the use of light energy to convert carbon dioxide into organic compounds such as carbohydrates. Photosynthetic organisms are called autotrophs (auto= self, trophos= feeding) More narrowly defined as photoautotrophs b/c energy to drive the conversion of carbon dioxide into an organic form comes from light. Photoautotrophic organisms are known as the earth"s primary producers as they generate the organic compounds that are used by other organisms. The consumers are the organisms that live by eating plants or other animals. Eventually bodies of primary producers and consumers support decomposers ie. a range of bacteria and some fungi.
