Gender stereotyping in the english language by laurel richardson: Analysis of verbal language can tell us a great deal about peoples fear, prejudices, anxieties, and interests. There are 6 general propositions concerning differential attitudes and feelings about males and females within the english language: women do not have full autonomous independent existence, they are a part of man. Man overboard refers to both men and women but we used the word man. When the word man is used in writing is does not create the image of humanity but rather males: our pronoun usage perpetuates different personality attributes for men and women. People refer to nurses, teachers & secretaries as she, and refer to doctors, architects & engineers as he. He high status occupation, she lower status occupations. The application of masculinity & femininity to specific nonhuman objects: linguistic practice defines females as immature, incompetent, and incapable and men as mature, complete, and competent.
