CHAPTER 9: TRAINING ­ many employees do not receive the training they should to prevent accidents ROLE OF OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY TRAINING: ­ 3 basic rights: o right to know = right to be informed about dangerous or unsafe work  o right to participate = right to actively take part in the protection of their own health   and safety o right to refuse unsafe work = right to withhold services if they feel as though they  are in danger as a result of their work  ­ must be advised of these rights ­ safety related training is needed to help individuals ensure that these rights are being upheld HEALTH AND SAFETY TRAINING PROGRAMS: ISD Model = Instructional Systems Design ­ has 3 parts: o Needs analysis – T&D process begins when a need or concern arises  Identifying employee and organizational deficiencies that can be addressed  with training and to recognize potential obstacles to success of a training  program.  Issues when assessing needs include: o Organizational analysis – analysis of entire organization  designed to examine its resources, strategy and environment  in order to assess the organizations support for training…… safety climate = employees shared perceptions of importance  of safety in the workplace o Job/ Task analysis – jobs and specific job tasks that are in  need of training are identified and studied o Person analysis – individual employee behaviors are studied  to identify gaps in performance (determining who needs  training) o Training design and delivery – translating what was learned from the needs  assessment into the actual training initiative  Training objectives touch on knowledge, skills and behavioral changes that  will be acquired through training   Purchase existing training package or design original program  Who will receive the training?  How many people trained at the same time? – smaller groups more effective  Who will deliver the training?  Train the trainer program – subject matter expert with appropriate content  skills is provided with coaching in areas such as program delivery and  communication   Where the training takes place – on the job vs off the job tr
